My project needs Microsoft Publisher in order to start a newspaper club at school.

I am a seventh grade humanities teacher in the South Bronx at a high-poverty level middle school. My students have very low reading levels and I want to encourage them to improve their reading and writing skills through journalism. My school receives free newspapers in the mornings, and I noticed that a lot of my lower-level students were really interested in reading the paper. I believe that the students would be extremely motivated to work on their writing skills if they had access to an environment where they did not feel the pressure of grades. I have limited access to computers, but there is very little software that would give the students the structure they need in order to make them feel as though they are writing for a real newspaper with a real layout. I have seen Microsoft Publisher, and it is very user-friendly and really gives the feel of an official newspaper. Students will learn a myriad of skills besides writing, as they will participate in investigative journalism and work on people-skills. They will work with layouts, design, and learn how to "sell" a product. The students will also have to fund-raise in order to obtain money for newspaper printing. This program would offer various students the ability to partake in many different tasks that would give them a taste of the real world. Most importantly, it will motivate the students to read and write, which will improve their reading levels and give them confidence. Thank you!
