Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students at our high school come to our school because they are proactive about their learning and are looking for a more rigorous environment in which to challenge themselves. We strive to go beyond the basic science standards and because of my passion for biotechnology and its potential future applications, I make sure to place a heavy emphasis on that in the classroom. Students love learning molecular genetics and envision themselves as leaders and innovators that will grow up to solve problems in the future, such as genetic abnormalities and food shortages through the use of genetic engineering.

There is nothing more important in a life science class than having the opportunity to engage with the learning interactively.

Although my students do a wonderful job of learning the material through lectures and student-centered discussions, being able to practice what they are learning with lab explorations would be invaluable. The materials I have requested will be used to run experiments for students to perform DNA fingerprints, and confirm results of bacterial transformation labs.

Being able to practice some of these lab techniques will increase student engagement and further motivate students to pursue a STEM education when they transition into college.
