Future Forensic Scientists Need Resources To Be Successful
My students need 40 copies of the murder mystery "The Bone Collector," a blacklight flashlight, forensic training DVDs, materials to complete a printed report and poster presentation
Imagine trying to learn how to be competitive in 21st century college classes as well as possibly being the first in your family to attend college. This is the situation for my dedicated forensic students that want to pursue the dream of higher education.
My students are amazing creative individuals who, despite their situation, have a positive attitude in life.
The majority live in poverty and qualify for free lunches. They do not have background and exposure to best serve them when competing with other high school students for post-secondary placement. They are taking college classes in high school, which shows their potential. However I do not have the materials to enhance our course. I believe this forensics class will inspire some to pursue their interest in science.
My Project
In this unit, students will work to solve a hypothetical crime by completing a series of experiments each week. The end goal is to collect enough evidence to arrest a suspect. Students will work predominately in their lab groups to complete the activities. At the end of the unit each student will prepare a paper and presentation while identifying the murderer based on these results.
As we move through the unit, my students will be reading the murder mystery "The Bone Collector." Class labs will analyze the same situations as the book thus enhancing both literacy and hands-on skills. The DVDs will enhance their knowledge of the topics covered.
By exposing my students to college content their horizons will be broadened.
Their passion for discovering new and exciting knowledge in a creative, project-based environment will be fostered. To succeed in college or the job market, it is a necessity to have 21st technology skills. It is with these supplies that I plan to make a difference in my student's learning this year.
