My students need 40 science fiction books to be able to explore this type of fiction in their 7th grade English classes.

My Students
Have you ever read a book you kept thinking about even days after you finished it? I know my students will talk for days about the science fiction books they'll read.
My students are motivated 7th graders in New Hampshire.
They attend a public middle school in a small town. Most of them like to read, though there are always a few reluctant readers looking for just the right book to spark their imaginations.
My Project
After I introduce the science fiction genre to my students, they will choose one of the five titles to read in small literature discussion groups. The students will run their own book groups and meet 3 times a week to discuss the book and what they think about science fiction. They will focus on the guiding question: Does science fiction try to merely predict the future or prevent it? They will also come up with a definition of science fiction. What makes a sci fi book?
Research shows that time students spend on reading for pleasure sharply drops off as they enter high school.
More demands on their time compete with the lure of a good book. It is my hope that exposure to science fiction will help more of my students find their reading niche and that they will further strengthen their reading habits before they enter high school.
