it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my students to be able to actively visualize the amazing phenomena that rules chemistry and physics. The biggest challenge we face is a lack of resources that effectively prevents my students from being fully engaged in how "cool" science is.
My students are from a low-income neighborhood in the Bronx, but they're incredibly hard-working and really love the opportunity to engage in hands-on lab activities.
I've ALWAYS been told that activities are what really gets my kids going and what really excites them about science, in comparison to any other subject in school. My school is focused on law and civic duty, and the students have always had a distinct interest in learning science in a tangible and realistic way, and they are always excited to learn new things. Having supplies would provide my students with a wealth of opportunities for true scientific experimentation and engagement.
My Project
My students will be able to work with real chemicals, to understand the interactions of matter on a subatomic level through observation, and to gain access to systems, like pulleys, that are otherwise inaccessible to them in their communities. What they learn in a book will only allow them to explore science to a certain extent, but experiments and hands-on activities will take them beyond the abstract and into a more concrete, powerful form of learning. I can envision my students engaged in in-depth discussions, with real-world results to speak in the language of real scientists. To get my students talking about science, I need to provide them with concrete evidence and tangible media off which to construct meaningful scientific arguments.
My project will provide my students in this upcoming school year with opportunities that were never otherwise available, because they will be the first group of students to work with chemicals and materials that real scientists use.
It will change my students' lives by providing them with true insight into the wonders of science. For example, with salts like lithium chloride and strontium chloride, my students will be able to understand how atomic emission is used to make fireworks.
