Future Caregivers at Play

My Project

Pretend play is one of the most effective ways to help children learn in a Pre-K classroom. To help engage and motivate these young learners, we try to switch our dramatic play center theme monthly. There are many benefits when children actively engage in a dramatic play concept, such as developing stronger attention spans, oral language, and self-regulation.

One recent idea the students had was to create a baby nursery with all the baby essentials!

Many of our students have babies at home and become big brothers or big sisters for the very first time. Young children are fascinated with babies and caring for babies. It is a perfect play concept to gather furniture and play materials because it is a universal idea and is meaningful to all learners since they were once babies themselves! Caring for others is a skill that only gets better with practice, and what a great foundation for all children to have.

With these materials, I will create different stations within our dramatic play center. The students will have opportunities to change diapers at the changing table, put babies to sleep in the cribs, engage in feeding time with the highchairs and the play food, and carry out bath time with the tub and accessories. This play scenario is such a strong interest for all children and not just my current class. Although my current class recently had 3 students welcome a new baby this year!
