This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I want my students to use the Engineering Design Process (ask, research, imagine, plan, create, test, and improve) to design a paper airplane to take flight.
I want my students to see that the world of aviation is open to them.
Therefore , I am requesting the Paper Planes and the Scientific Method science kit. Students will build their very own paper airplane and fly them. After students ask how airplanes fly they will do their own research on how to explore the concept of flight. Therefore, I am asking for non fiction books on flight at their level including "Let's Fly This Plane: Emma's STEM Adventure Series" and " Ada Twist, Scientist: Exploring Flight!". I want students to learn about historical people that pioneered flight so I am requesting biographies on Amelia Earhart, The Wright Brothers and Tuskegee Airman.
Students will work in groups to imagine and plan their paper airplanes. Then they will create their airplanes from the supplies in the kit. Afterwards, the fun will begin when students actually test out their paper airplane designs by flying them out on our the playground. Students will analyze what worked and didn't work with their paper airplanes, refine them, and fly them again.
