Middle school students often face challenges with engagement, motivation, and staying focused in school. At Mohave Valley Junior High, our students are intelligent, creative, and thrive on challenges. In 2021, we launched an innovation lab to provide forward-thinking lessons and integrate 21st-century technology to enhance attendance and engagement. Since then, our elective offerings have evolved from Physical Education and Coding to include 3D Printing, Aeronautics, Art, Film, and Broadcasting, continuously adapting based on student interests.
Our students perform better when they have choices, and engage with technology they enjoy, which in turn increases their engagement.
Research shows that innovative approaches—such as critical thinking, simulations, and project-based learning—enhance student learning exponentially. Since the inception of the innovation lab, we have seen significant student growth, increased attendance, and heightened engagement. Our mission, "Student Focused, Future Driven," guides our staff in finding ways to better reach our students and expand their knowledge.
To sustain this momentum, we aim to incorporate new offerings, materials, and lessons each year to keep our students excited about learning.
Our goal for this project is to infuse our 3D pen STEM station with various color filament, stencils and some protective gear to enable creativity to flow. Students are currently working on prototyping an invention to solve a community problem. They also will choose a project to create for a gift as we are working on empathy. In addition, we are planning a space unit where students design a space invention for another planet. All these projects will need various color filament in order for students to create their designs.
