Furthering our Pathfinding in Computer Science/Coding

Help me give my students the chance to bring my own summer STEM learning in circuitry/robotics/block coding (virtual Pathfinders Summer Institute 2022 by Infosys) to deepen their computer science/maker education skills in my SPARK gifted enrichment program.

My Project

I took three courses this summer from Infosys Pathfinders: Chibitronics: Paper Circuitry; Coding with Microbits; Robotics with Hummingbirds. I took these courses because when I survey my gifted learners in grades 1-6, they told me they wanted to learn more about coding and robots and I had no idea how to begin to tackle that request without some professional development in place first. With the knowledge gained this summer and a donor's choose project funded by our state department of education, I was able to purchase chibitronics LEDS, gumdrop LEDs, copper tape, batteries, some Hummingbird brains and makerspace bullding materials to begin to implement simple circuit teaching/learning in our first month of school. The kids were fully engaged and so excited as they used troubleshooting, collaborating to make their simple circuits light up in this cross curricular ELA/ART/Science/Tech lesson. Now I want my students to deepen that learning with a next step of having them program parallel circuits and switches in conjunction with MakeCode for Chibitronics using the chibichips/clips for block coding lessons and basics. We already have 1:1 chromebooks so that piece is in place, but those chibichips/clips will allows student to share re-usable resources to make more complex cross-curricular paper circuitry projects to share out their learning in new STEM ways.
