My Project
Which Disney villain stole the school's animal shelter fundraiser money? With our fur-ensics unit, my fifth-grade students will have the chance to crack this case!
In our CSI unit, students become real-world problem solvers as they use science, observation, and critical thinking to crack the case, just like real detectives!
Students will use the felt-tip pens and chromatography paper to analyze the results of each suspect's felt-tip pen to see if it is a match for the ransom letter. They will also have the chance to learn about their own fingerprints and markers detectives look for as they analyze their suspects' prints and then capture their own prints with the stamps and fingerprint cards. But the fun doesn't stop there! Students will analyze blood types to find a match for the evidence from the crime scene. They will use the dropper bottles to test the suspects' blood for A-Antigen, B-Antigen, and Rh Factor.
During this unit, I will feature videos of diverse detectives as well as invite guest speakers into the classroom in order for all my students to see themselves in forensic science and to learn about possible future careers. Through these experiences, my students will strengthen their observation, logical reasoning, teamwork, and communication skills while applying the scientific method.
