My Students

My students are from a variety of backgrounds, in a high needs community. Many of the students are from recently immigrated families, and do not have access to educational resources. We are a large school of over 725 students and we are a Title I school with over 80% of our students receiving Free and Reduced Lunch.

Our highly diverse population makes our school beautiful.

We have students from Mexico, lndia, Somalia, Vietnam, to name a few countries. We also have students who have grown up in the neighborhood for decades.

Many of our students come to the school library, thrilled to check out books, and act like they are in a candy store, getting to choose an assortment of books they may not have exposure to at home. Our families are busy with work and day to day survival, so visiting the public library is low on the priority list when all these kids need more exposure to reading books and technology.

My Project

A majority of our students gravitate to the graphic novel section. Young readers are included, however, many of our graphic novels are not appropriate for early readers. The text is often too difficult, or themes are more mature. Many of the books with pictures are for older readers in Grades 3-5. We will set these books in the picture book area to attract younger readers.

Building a collection of graphic novels and cartoons appealing to younger readers will grab the attention of primary grades (K-2) to read.

The TOON collection will make a great start in our collection for younger readers. The collection for younger readers will also be helpful for ESL students.
