Experiential learning is one of the ways to make Earth and Space Science tangible, and relevant to young people. The items that we are requesting will provide us with an opportunity to engage in field work, make detailed observations, conduct demonstrations and have robust experiences conducting experiments. Our young people will be able to provide factual, relevant and robust scientific explanations utilizing the knowledge and skills they gain during our time together.
The materials that we are requesting will be catalysts to continue to stir their imaginations, and build their critical thinking.
Our UCW scholars are curious and energized about learning weird, fun and/or unbelievable scientific facts through tangible and relevant experiences. In the fall semester we shared questions we have about Earth & Space that people may consider irrelevant, or simple. However, their questions revealed a level of curiosity that would ignite a fire in anyone who has a love and appreciation for science. All of the items on our list will support funding our FUNky Wednesdays and Fizzle Fridays. On Wednesdays we explore their questions through hands-on demonstrations, such as: "What sounds do stars make?" "Why is space not breathable?" "How do we know there are other galaxies really exist?" "How do we know all the other planets and pictures of them are real?" "Who named the sun?" "Are humans aliens?" "Are humans scarier than dinosaurs?" "Were there really giants?" "Were there really caveman?" "What if the meteor that hit Earth, were humans?" On Fridays, as the weather permits, we will engage field study around our neighborhood and city. That includes using our telescopes, notebooks, printing images from our adventures, testing natural resources and engaging joyful moments of experiencing science.
