This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a different language at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social task challenging. Due to the fact that a significant amount of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of the students come from low income households. My students work hard everyday and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!
My Project
I am requesting level 1 Fundation materials in order to help my students advance their reading and spelling skills. The Fundations program focuses on phonemic awareness skills, phonics/word study skills, knowledge of high frequency words, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting and spelling skills. These are skills that many of my students demonstrate extreme difficulty with. If they are not proficient in these areas it leads to poor comprehension and reading skills that are below grade level. Some of them have this difficulty because they have language, intellectual and learning disabilities and some are English Language Learners.
I am always looking for new programs that can help my students succeed because it is critical that they are proficient readers inside and outside of the school environment.
Fundations uses multi-sensory techniques to help students retain information, practice skills and achieve success. This program includes a teaching manual, student materials, a home support pack, visual aids and sound cards, posters, word of the day cards and high-frequency word cards. I believe this program will help my students succeed by providing materials that will be engaging and assist with advancing their overall reading and spelling abilities.
