My students need a chance to return to a classroom optimized for learning after losing everything in the recent flood. They need books to read, bookshelves for those books, and comfortable places to sit and read.
My students are a variety of different types: from the honor roll students in my first class to my inclusion class, which has more than 50% of Special Ed students in my middle class. More than half of my students receive free or reduced lunch and more than 80% of all of my students lost everything in the historic flooding this August. I had to give many of them notebooks myself to start the school year, and now those are gone, as our classrooms flooded as well as our homes. We participate in the accelerated reader program and my students get 10 minutes of class time to read each day. I kept comfortable places in the classroom for kids to read to make their experience more enjoyable, but our class library and our fun seating was also lost with the flood. I would like to once again provide a positive climate for reading and a place to put our donated books.
My Project
My sweet students have lost so much over the last couple of weeks - many have lost their homes as well as their school. I want to give them a safe, comfortable environment to return to - as close as possible to when they left. We read for 10 minutes every day, so my kids need books. They loved reading from my video rocker and bean bag chair, which I would like to replace with a more durable stool; I'm trying to replace those experiences for them. Our whiteboard that lets my students know our agenda for the week was warped beyond help, so I'm also trying to replace that.
