Functional Life Skills for Special Education Students
Help me give my students the ability to focus better through flexible seating, edible motivation to work, and fidget toys and begin to learn needed life skills to increase their independence and ability to help clean at home.
I have a total of 4 students this year. Our class is a functional skills class, meaning that each of my students have significant disabilities that interfere with their ability to learn the same way as general education students.
They are a fun group of kids who want to learn and be treated as if they don't have any special needs.
Due to their specialized needs, it is up to me to make sure that I follow their IEPs (individualized educational programs) and create diverse lesson plans to help each of the to meet their goals. My students have so much to offer everyone around them and brighten everyone's day. Regardless of their personal challenges, you can see their intelligence as they try to process things they are experiencing in their worlds.
Not only do I and my aides assist them with their education, we are frequently teaching them social skills, behavior management including new ways to handle frustrations and sensory overloads, and so much more. We've already seen progress for each one of them and I can't wait to see how far they can get this year!
My Project
Hello! My students are working on learning so many skills from basic math and reading to life skills like vacuuming and learning how to handle all sorts of sensory struggles. To be able to effectively teach these skills we need a vacuum in our classroom, sensory items to help them stay focused, and edible treats to help motivate them to work.
My students have bright futures ahead of them, but at their young ages they need a bit of extra assistance to reach the many goals they have both academically, developmentally, AND functionally.
