My Students

Common sense solutions to organization can mean the difference between tranquility and chaos. Knowing where to put things guarantees knowing where to find them. Thanks to Donors Choose, I've acquired new storage units for my classroom and their impact has been phenomenal. I hope to continue the trend!

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Following 2 to 3-step directions, sorting by attributes, and demonstrating comprehension of positional words (under, over, beside, behind, etc.) are core components of our Pre-Kindergarten curriculum. It's no exaggeration to say that everything we do presents a learning opportunity. Whether it's navigating classroom centers, interacting with others in outdoor centers, putting materials away, or simply washing hands, students thrive on routine and function. Even in my 18th year teaching Pre-K, I'd never claim to know it all, yet I was amazed by the impact new storage units had on our classroom environment.

My Project

When it comes to big construction, manipulatives, puzzles, and our growing collection of books, everyone knows just where they belong. While most important for the children, daily parent volunteers and the occasional substitute teacher catch on quickly. We do, however, still have some areas of need. A Mobile Listening & Storage Center would replace the table, tangled cords, and hodgepodge of baskets we currently call, 'The Listening Center'. The Clip-A-Zip Kit will allow children independent access to our collection of books on CD. We store outdoor equipment (balls, rings, beanbags, chalk, dough/tools, bubbles, etc.) in a once-mobile wooden chart box that is down to two wheels. Although never ideal, we made the best of what was available. An Outdoor Classroom Cart & Cover would afford organization, accessibility, protection, and best of all, four wheels! Finally, a Table & 2-Bench Set for the Housekeeping Center would permit the 19-year-old veteran to retire & provide additional storage, too.

My students and I have experienced the positive effects of organization and we're hooked!

Spending less time on clean-up leaves more for everything else. We'd like to extend the transformation into the Listening Center, Outdoor Centers, and the Housekeeping Center. By enhancing our classroom environment, we can maximize learning opportunities.
