My classroom consists of students who are in first, second, third, and fourth grades. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners who have moderate to severe disabilities that include autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. My students come from all over the city of Chicago, making the class rich with diversity and culture.
No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, my students continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School and our district continues to face financial difficulties. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from Donors Choose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
My students are wonderful individuals with disabilities. Many of my students have a diagnosis of autism. This effects them in a variety of ways. The classroom environment can sometimes overstimulate or under-stimulate some of the individuals.
Because they cannot always self-regulate, the students require different tools and activities to help calm them and/or stimulate them.
The push pop bubble sensory toys are a quiet intervention that will help the students feel more comfortable at these times and focus on the tasks at hand. For students seeking visual input, the expandable toy sphere will fulfill this need.
While daily life skills may come easily to most individuals, many of my students struggle with basic skills like buttoning and tying. The busy boards and buckle pillow will target some of these skills and provide the students with hands-on practice in a fun way!
My students, like all students, have been impacted immensely by the break in in-person instruction. These materials will help them get back into the routine of going to school and working on these very important skills. Thanks for your consideration!
