My Students
Although gentrification brings economic growth to a once poverished community, it also can displace families and create larger economic gaps amongst citizens. Dumbo, Brooklyn is one of the fastest growing gentrified neighborhoods in NYC. Some of my students have boundless opportunities while others think about when their next meal will be and if they have any books at home to do their homework. My students are in need of equal opportunities for learning, abundant amount of books, and endless love!
My Project
We often think that reading, writing, and math are the most important components of a classroom. However, what we do not realize is that play teaches children more than we could ever imagine. It opens their minds to imagination and creativity. As a STEM school, we want to allow our students the opportunities to learn through play and building; to problem solve and work together with their classmates. Having toys where students can create and imagine, benefits them in all other subject areas. Students learn through play and they apply it to math, reading, and writing. We want to be able to give our students opportunities in the classroom, that they may not be able to receive elsewhere.
