I have a wonderful class of 20 kindergarten students in a public school in the city of Buffalo. Most of these students come from low-income households. Many students can not afford basic school supplies and I do what I can to provide them with these materials.
I have over five different languages spoken in my class, and over 30 different languages spoken in our school.
Some of my students do not speak any English at all, but they are learning. Some of these students have just come to America from other countries and some from refugee camps . It is challenging to teach students who speak limited to no English, but it is also very rewarding.
My students love to learn! Any resources that I can provide for them will encourage this love of learning!
My Project
My kindergarten students love learning about the sounds that letters make. They often find letters in words and will tell anyone who will listen the sounds the letters make. They are well on their way to learning to read!
The materials I have requested provide the students with engaging and challenging activities that the students can complete independently.
The beginning sounds activities will help the students to practice the letter sounds they have learned and challenge them to discover the letter sounds that have not yet been presented. The Phonemic Awareness Cards provide repetition of letter sounds in a fun, engaging way by using a magnetic action. The Word Family Wheels will help the students blend together letter sounds that they know in order to read words. This activity will help the students to be successful with their first experiences in decoding words. All of these activities offer a self-checking feature and varying levels to provide differentiation, allowing me to meet the needs of my different learners.
These activities will add to our learning areas which are an important part of our kindergarten program. These areas offer students the opportunity to work independently and work at their own unique level.
