This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a reading specialist, my goal is to nurture a love of reading among my students. The students I support have not yet found their stride in reading, and require additional assistance to meet grade-level reading goals in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Decodable texts support phonics instruction, but the majority of books for this kind of instruction are intended for younger readers. PhonicBooks makes wonderful decodable books that are intended for older struggling readers, and they recently came out with this new set of decodable books that fit a gap in my instructional collection
My students are motivated to become better readers, and they deserve books that will maintain their interest and make them feel good about themselves while they read.
These books are engaging for older readers. They look and feel like books that 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders would want to read, but they are written to support foundational phonics instruction at the Kinder and 1st grade level. These books will help my students gain confidence and independence as readers, while fostering a love of reading through interesting and fun stories.
