Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to learn to spell or add? Well, I'm sure you've run into a child that is struggling at one or both of those important skills. What better way to get the kids to learn by playing a game?

My students reside in the GREAT state of Texas and they range from the grades of Pre-K to 5th grade and they're GREAT (Just like the state, of course.)!!!

Nobody learns at the same pace or even the same way. Everybody can use a little Differentiated Instruction. Scrabble is hands-on, visual and we all like to play fun games, right? So *wink wink*,learning how to add and spell while playing sounds like a winner.

My Project

This past summer I got hooked on the cell phone application Words With Friends and I couldn't put my phone down. The next day, after playing the game almost all night, I sent my principal an e-mail saying I wanted to start a Scrabble Club. Of course, she loved the idea. Then, I began to look at prices and classroom sizes and became a little discouraged. Now, I'm back on track!!! I just know the kids are going to be so amped to join a club in which they learn and have fun at the same time. They'll be having so much fun they won't even realize that they're adding and using every part of their brain to come up with those tricky words. They won't want to stop playing. Another way that I know it will help our students is because last year I helped with my school's book club and I saw how hard it was for Bilingual students to pronounce or spell some of the smallest 4 letter words in English. I think the club will definitely help them with spelling not only in English but Spanish too.

This project is important to me because I have taught struggling readers and before they learn to read, they learn their letters and words.

I think that by playing Scrabble they will want to try and read more to be able to come up with more words to use during the game which transfers over to successes in the classroom and their real life.
