My Students
Students are able to retain information longer when they are having fun learning. Hands-on learning materials give the children the chance to be in control of what they learn and give them the opportunity to work at their own pace. The Three R's don't have to be boring anymore!
My class is a cross-categorical special education class in a public school in Illinois.
I serve kindergarten age students. This is a full-day program. My students have a variety of disabilities, including autism, cognitive disability, other health impaired, emotional disability and developmental delay. My students live in a high poverty area, so their opportunities are limited. My students are inquisitive and excited about learning. Providing them with as many new experiences as possible is a high priority. Some of my students have been in a half-day special education classroom for 3-4 year olds, but others have not had prior schooling. Keeping the learning environment fun and inviting for the children is a key to their continued learning.
My Project
My students are starting to learn letters, numbers and letter sounds. They are so excited because they know this is the first step to reading. These materials will reinforce what they have learned and what they will learn in the future. Many of my students have difficulty with listening skills. The listening games will provide them with practice in a fun way. They are thrilled when they can identify a specific environmental sound. All of the materials requested will be available to the students at all times, so they can make their own choices in what they choose to work on. They can work alone, with a group of peers or with one of the teachers. This will give them the opportunity to build self-help skills and build their self-confidence.
Wouldn't it be boring if we couldn't pick up a good book to read?
Building reading and comprehension skills is vital at a young age so these children can enjoy reading. Building listening skills promotes conversation and social skills in our children. The children love the hands-on math materials. They don't realize they are learning! They think they are just having fun playing! Please help my students build all these vital skills to prepare them for a lifetime of enjoying learning!
