Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students with intellectual disabilities learn best through a multimodal teaching approach. This means that I am constantly trying to come up with creative and fun strategies to teach different topics. These specific materials would enhance my lessons surrounding life skills, especially financial literacy. Nintendo Switch games like MarioKart serve as a reinforcement for my students after a more traditional lesson covering financial topics. During the game of Mariokart, students are able to collect coins. I feel that this aspect of the game would provide my students with extra practice of learning how to earn and count money. The cardstock paper would also be useful in providing my students with worksheets that are more durable and colorful to practice with various financial topics. I would even use the cardstock to have my students create fake money and practice learning the value and appearance of different dollar bills. The electric sharpener would allow my students to be more efficient in sharpening their pencils during writing assignments or projects. As for the wooden shoe, many of my students with special needs have difficulties with simple tasks such as tying shoes. I feel that this is important considering that they are already in high school and this would be an amazing tool to help teach them how to become more independent. The shoe would also serve as a supplemental activity for teaching my students skills needed when shopping for clothes, or in this case shoes.
