Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If you were to peek into my room on a given day, you would see students working together and laughing as they learn. Though students come to kindergarten at different learning levels, they are all able to help each other to be their best and have fun doing it. My students love anything hands-on and interactive. My students come to school every day eager to learn and grow.
Our school serves TK-8 students in Oakland, CA as they learn and grow.
These students show hard work and grit coming to school and being ready for new challenges every day in a safe learning environment. There is not always enough to go around to help them on their journey to the next grade and beyond. As their teacher, I hope that I can help them to be their best and reach all of their goals and serve the whole child.
My Project
My students have just begun learning about a classroom environment this year. After a year of distance learning, they are so excited to be in our space in real life. Part of real life is that we get choices and flexibility. As adults, we are able to choose standing desks, ergonomic chairs, or other things that help us focus while we work. Students deserve the same choices to mimic the real world.
Kindergarten bodies crave movement and flexible seating choices while they work.
I hope to use wobble chairs, yoga balls, wobble cushions, and the idea of choice to bring more movement to our desk time. Currently students only have normal chairs, which work, but don't provide them with the opportunity to wiggle as they work. I also will set up a system of equitable choice where students get to choose their seat for the day and recognize what their body needs to be successful in our classroom. I am excited for this new level of joy, fun, flexibility, and choice.
