This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the most amazing people who make me laugh every day! I teach a first-grade bilingual classroom in Rogers Park. First grade is my favorite age because I get to see the students collaborate with each other and fall in love with reading.

My Project

In first grade, we follow a curriculum called Fundations. Fundations breaks down reading in a researched-based way and gives the students lists of decodable words to help them understand phonics and apply it to their own independent reading.

The students will use these tools to help them hear how many sounds are in each word and help them break down words phonetically in order to decode words.

The students are given the opportunity to practice their Fundations knowledge every day in literacy centers, where they work in small groups on literacy activities. The magnet wands and pop its will make these literacy centers much more engaging, interesting, and effective for the students.
