This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from various social economic backgrounds. They range from low income families to homes where parents are trying their best to raise their children in a neighborhood that has gang related problems daily. There are students that don't have either parent and are either with a foster family or with a relative. Either way, they come to class eager to learn, which is why I wouldn't want anything more but to enhance their excitement for education through games and materials.
My Project
Many of my students are budding artists, therefore, I do my best to incorporate art throughout their school day. For example, students created paper dolls of characters they are currently reading about. In Math, they tap into their creative geometry juices to construct a 3D snowflake. I want to continue this fun beyond the classroom to their home. I want to take homework to a new level, where my students actually look forward to doing homework like they do when I mix art with our academic learning.
Supplies at home can be scarce for my students, therefore I want to provide them with arts and crafts materials that will not only engage their learning but include that much needed family time.
For example, providing watercolors, magic model clay, and colored markers will motivate even my reluctant learners. The white board tape will be placed on their take home journals. They can easily wipe and write without the worrry of wasting paper. Timers will help during independent learning at home. It will help keep students on track and focused, which is a high need that many of my parents have expressed concern.
I foresee many hands on homework activties. My current homework will change only for the better. My students and parents will be excited for this innovative way to continue what they learned at school to home.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
