This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi. I work as an occupational therapist with a variety of students that come to my room to work on sensory, visual motor and fine-motor skills. I also work with children in their Autism classrooms to support these same needs.

The pandemic has had a significant impact on gross-motor, fine-motor, and sensory processing skills with the closing of playgrounds and increase in technology used.

My students are requiring a lot more sensory breaks and are struggling to attend and self-regulate. The students I work with are struggling with decreased fine motor strength and struggling to learn to write their letters and their name. The students will benefit from these educational games to increase their fine motor stills and promote a functional grasp with writing tools as well as their social skills and appropriate play skills-including turn taking, following instructions. The sensory items and fidgets will be used as social-emotional supports to help the students increase their attention to task. I will be creating sensory bins with the toys and kinetic sand so the students have access to them in my classroom. The will use the new art supplies when completing crafts to increase their visual motor skills involving drawing and coloring/painting. These new classroom supplies will make learning more fun and help my kids develop the skills they need to make more progress with sensory regulation and handwriting.
