Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in a self-contained special education early childhood center for young children, ages 3 to 7. All of our students have mild to severe physical and/or other health impairments, cognitive disabilities, and speech/language impairments. Our educational setting and goals are unique. Although we provide a traditional curriculum aligned to state standards, all learning must be adapted to meet the developmental level of our students across all domains, fine/gross motor, speech, and, cognitive. Our young students must "learn" critical skills that are often taken for granted amongst the regular education population. Many of our students have educational goals for self-help skills (feeding, toileting, dressing/undressing) to enable them to function as independently as possible in their immediate environment. In particular, many of our students are learning to eat/chew, some are beginning to learn to feed themselves, and others are on the road to independence. As you can imagine, all of this can wind up in one big mess! Therefore, many of our young students wear bibs. The children are fed twice a day, breakfast and lunch. Consequently we generate quite a bit of laundry on a daily basis. This can be costly when you consider the expense of laundry detergent, wear and tear on cloth bibs, and the cost to run two washers and dryers every day. Over ninety percent of our student population come from low income backgrounds. Most of our school parents have limited resources and are not in the financial position to contribute to school sponsored fund raisers or to requests for classroom supplies. Consequently, we are always looking for alternative sources of funding for even the smallest of needs. I am writing to request a donation for sixty plastic bibs. Each bib has a pocket to catch food that spills. Using plastic instead of cloth will not only reduce our daily expenses, it will enable our students to develop these critical skills independently and with dignity. Thank you in advance for helping our young students "learn without the mess"!
