My classroom consists of beginner level English students. These students struggle every day with the language. They often have a difficult time making friends in this English dominant school. I would love to see my students playing and interacting in English.
Our middle school has a large population of Asian immigrants.
The students in my class have little to no English skills when they arrive here. With the changing curriculum, ESL students have a hard time keeping up. They struggle socially as well as academically. I would love to create a safe, judgment free zone where my beginners can have fun and make mistakes while learning English. Many students have come to me in a stressed state worried about homework and state tests. These games will help me create that. When I found an old Boggle game that had been forgotten for many years in my classroom, I taught the children how to play. They were laughing and competing in no time; writing down and sharing they words they had found. Please help me re-create this joyful atmosphere.
My Project
With these materials, I plan on having a "learning game day". Student's whose behavior is exemplary, may participate in English learning games. The students will also be able to play these games after school during ESL club. The students in this school are hard working and will care for the games as if they were their own. This will be using English in a real world setting, as well as having fun.
These learning games will make a huge difference on the my students' outlook toward learning.
They will look forward to earning the privilege to play. I expect to see their English proficiency grow in no time.
