My Students
I teach in a Title I school with 750 students. Many students face a tremendous amount of adversity at home yet still come to school ready to learn. Our school offers so many incredible classes and learning opportunities for students, but we are falling short in one area: morning and afternoon drop off and pick up.
Students spend on average 30 minutes a day on the hallways waiting for school to begin or for transportation to arrive in the afternoon.
As part of our job, teacher cover morning and afternoon duties as students trickle in and out throughout the day with the various transportation options (buses, after school programs, car riders, walkers, van riders, etc). We expect that students are quiet on the hallway while waiting. We offer opportunities to go to the library and provide books to the students as well. However, there is just no way to let all of the students go to the library and not all are enthused about reading (despite our efforts). We know that our students love to learn and we want to use every minute we can to provide them with these opportunities!
My Project

We are looking to create activity carts that promote critical thinking and problem solving skills that help de-stress, are technology-free, and quiet.
Our students do not always have access to materials at home so we are looking to hone these skills during their sitting/waiting time. We have piloted this on our hallway and it has been a big success in the morning, but we unfortunately are in need of many more materials!
