My Students
I have a classroom full of second graders, ages 7-9. They represent a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and an even wider variety of abilities. Some students are gifted, some are learning English as a second language, some have learning disabilities, and some have behavior problems.
The one thing they all have in common - a love for school and learning.
Many of my students come to school with odds stacked against them - stressful or not supportive living environments, poor nutrition, lack of English fluency, poor self-esteem, etc. This school and classroom is their home away from home.
My Project
One area my students struggle the most with is listening and speaking. Teaching primarily English as a Second Language (ESL) students I know that it is a struggle for them to overcome learning a new language and having the confidence to speak to native peers. I am requesting a listening station that will allow 4 students at a time to listen to a book. I am also requesting multiple sets of audiobooks on CD so that students have a wide variety to choose from each day, as well as a variety of difficulty to reach my different leveled students.
Due to the wide variety of students who are ESL students and the wide variety of academic levels I have in my room I have realized that my students benefit more from small groups than whole group lessons.
Therefore, my hope is to provide educational stations for my students that will benefit and challenge each child, while I pull small groups to work on specific tasks that group struggles with.
The other supplies I am requesting are for a Read to Self station, Read to Partner station, and a Phonics station. These materials will make these stations fun and engaging while helping the students grow.
