My students need STEM materials like an earthquake simulator, constructor kits, K'Nex sets, and magnetic sets to meet the Next Generation Science Standards!

My Students

Our school is a rural PreK-8 school just outside of a university town. So, while small, we are diverse.

While my students have diverse learning needs, they all share the same thirst for creativity and to learn outside the box!

With a state whose budget for education always seems to be in crisis, this project would allow me to purchase materials my students wouldn't otherwise have access to.

I teach 17 energetic, compassionate young learners. They come from various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. They are a true learning community and learn best through discovery.

My Project

These STEM kits will help my students meet the Next Generation Science standards in ways they haven't yet before.

Not only will these materials help students engage in STEM activities, but they will enhance our existing curriculum in many ways.

Students will get to branch out from the textbook and their seats as they become fully engaged in creation and design. With all of the changes in education, including the shift in standards, it's imperative that classroom materials support our standards and endeavors. The Next Generation Science Standards ask students go deeper, construct, conclude, project, and use more critical thinking skills than ever before. These kits will allow students to build, create, and model their ideas both with instructions and abstractly. Having such options will enthrall young learners to challenge themselves. These options don't exist on a worksheet or in a textbook. I'd love to have these materials to support my curriculum and have available during other times.

I'm very excited to have the possibility of adding these kits and activities to my science period and Fun Friday hands-on time. Students will be able to work individually, with a partner, or in groups with most of these materials. They will be able to see the works of their hands and minds and hopefully, it will encourage them to continue testing theories and going deep!

I have a vision as to how to implement each set of materials into my classroom: The microscope kits will be implemented into our life science curriculum, as well as Fun Friday explorations. The earthquake simulator will enhance our life science exploration. The constructor kits, K'Nex sets, and magnetic sets will be used for timed challenges, challenges with specific directions and rules, and free exploration. Sometimes they'll rotate, and sometimes they'll choose!
