My Students
Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100 percent of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to start STEAM clubs.
My Project
We have started a MakerSpace at our school and have some materials that students have started to explore. They are excited to learn about coding and robotics, as well as other STEAM activities.
According to a study by Karen Bogenschneider and Carol Johnson, "A consistent body of research concludes that parents are the first and foremost influence on their children’s development and school success." We want to utilize this to help our children succeed.
In order to meet our district and state science standards, and to ensure that our students are prepared for the future, we need to involve families in our school learning community.
In addition to the introduction to MakerSpace that the students receive during their library time, we are starting STEAM clubs. Parents are invited to join their students in the free before-school activity. We are also utilizing some high school students enrolled in technology classes to assist the students and parents.
The first group will learn some basics in coding, robotics, circuits, and other STEAM topics. The materials requested include a Makey Makey kit, Dash and Dot sets, an Osmo Coding Game, and Bloxel sets. These are easily obtainable for schools, address the science and technology requirements, and work with our current MakerSpace materials. The materials are also reasonably priced and family-friendly, so that those that want to obtain them for home use can. The club will meet weekly for 4 months.
The state, district, and building assessments for science will help us gauge how successful we are, as well as observations as they engage in activities. As students master an area, they will then help other students in our school learn these skills. Family involvement will help families become more technologically literate in a world that will need it.
