Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun." -Picasso. This project is an example of how you can turn colors into the world, we just need the materials to do it!
My students integrate STEM concepts in their learning every day.
Outside of my classroom, my students and I have created a literacy garden, a place where they plant and cultivate seeds, and use as a space for quiet reading and research. This year we will enhance the space by planting a butterfly garden and will track, observe and document the butterflies and other insects that are attracted to the space. My students will conduct research and find out what species are common to our area and plant the appropriate seeds with the hopes that we will get "visitors" in the spring!
My Project
Scientists document everything. That is exactly what my students will do! They will use the blank books to carefully draw their observations and findings as well as provide written descriptions. They will read the science books requested to help give them additional knowledge and background information they will need for reports and presentations. In addition, my students will create three dimensional insect models and habitats with clay and paint insect portraits on canvas to display at our annual open house/science fair. Moreover, my students will add insect drawings to our Learning Wall mural, further showing what they have learned during this unit of study and add another dimension to our mural. I selected these materials because they are kid-friendly and will give my students the opportunity to have experience with multiple art mediums in addition to truly connecting Science and Art.
This project will allow my young scientists to create a beautiful teaching tool for the entire school and showcase the integration of Science and Art.
Community and family members who pass by the area will learn important information about environment, nature, and science while admiring artwork that was created by their children. Please help my students shine with pride as they assist in the growth of artistic aesthetic choices along with the growth of our literacy garden.
