Our school is a diverse, multicultural, Title I school that is dedicated to providing students with a rigorous and relevant instructional program. I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their ability to succeed.
In my classroom, I have a wide variety of student abilities and languages, but I ensure that all students have the opportunity to be exposed to hands-on, STEAM-based learning.
More than anything, our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
My Project
Tablets, like the iPads, promote hands-on learning. This iPad will allow me to expand this interactivity to the entire class. Increased engagement means increased understanding, as we instill a love of learning via standards-based content. The tablet provides a huge return on investment for years to come given the amount of computing power relative to the cost. This builds toward our long-term goal of creating interactive, STEM-based classrooms with multiple technologies readily available.
Combined with our current classroom technologies, this will provides amazing opportunities to work and think at higher levels.
In mathematics, my students will be using the iPad for their small business planning projects. In this project, students create their own company, brand, and product. This project requires students to also create successful marketing campaigns, and many students have requested to shoot commercials for their company and product. This iPad will allow my students to design their products using Tinkercad as well as shoot commercials for their products. In science, my students will be able to work digitally on their lab reports as well as do live recordings of experiments.
Donations sponsoring this project make a real difference for students who otherwise lack the support and resources to pursue STEM-related careers. In many cases, these students are new to our country or come from low-income backgrounds where families are often unable to create these kinds of opportunities. By exciting interest through accessible STEM projects, students realize the value and potential of their education.
