Our school is a diverse, multicultural, Title I school dedicated to providing students with a rigorous and relevant instructional program. I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their ability to succeed.
In my classroom, I have a wide variety of student abilities and languages, but I ensure that all students have the opportunity to be exposed to hands-on, STEAM-based learning.
More than anything, our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
My Project
STEM education refers to the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEAM education incorporates the “A” for the arts, recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best developed through exposure to the arts. STEAM is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world.
The goal of this project is to foster the true innovation that comes with combining the mind of a scientist or technologist with that of an artist or designer.
These experiences allow for students to make real world connections that will enable them to become successful in future STEAM-related careers. In 2016, we were fully funded for a MakerBot 3D printer. All of our projects and activities incorporated every area of STEAM. It has been an amazing and unimaginable opportunity for my students to create something with our classroom 3D printer.
This project will fund a replacement MakerBot Smart Extruder and PLA Filament. These materials will help us to continue to use our 3D printer to its greatest potential while having my students create change from the classroom.
