Our school is a diverse, multicultural, Title I school that is dedicated to providing students with a rigorous and relevant instructional program. I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their ability to succeed.
In my classroom, I have a wide variety of student abilities and languages, but I ensure that all students have the opportunity to be exposed to hands-on, STEAM-based learning.
More than anything, our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
My Project
For this project, I am in need of two robotic arms. My students will be tasked with working together to build a robotic arm from the ground up. Once this is complete, the students will design a task for the robot to complete. Students will have to work together to create tasks, test, adjust, and manipulate the robot as needed in order to get the robot to complete their assigned tasks. They will make observations about capabilities and movement of their robotic arm.
These supplies will allow me enrich my classroom an activity that will require a great deal of teamwork and creativity, as well as develop critical thinking skills test and adjust their designs and tasks.
This project is vital to my classroom as we need a variety of tasks and materials to keep our students engaged in the areas of Mathematics and Science. Most importantly, it will get students more excited about math and science in the classroom, since they can make many real-world connections.
Donations sponsoring this project make a real difference for students who otherwise lack the support and resources to pursue STEM-related careers. In many cases, these students are new to our country or come from low-income backgrounds where families are often unable to create these kinds of opportunities. By exciting interest through accessible STEM projects, students realize the value and potential of their education.
