My students need eighteen STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) books to enrich our class library, including The Circulatory System, Earth, and Weird Sea Creatures.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of the most gratifying aspects of my job is getting the right text into the hands of the right student. In order to make this happen, I need a wide array of resources. STEM books are of the most interest to students. Help me get these texts into the hands of my students.
I have sixty-four eager students in my two periods of language arts.
Our school is located in southeast Los Angeles County. All of my students qualify for free lunch and fifty percent are English Language Learners. They equally enjoy reading independently or as part of an Interactive Read Aloud, where I read the text aloud and lead a class discussion. In addition, they express strong opinions and a sense of compassion through their writing.
My Project
I will use these STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) books in a variety of ways. These books will be available for students to read during our Independent Reading Block. They will also have the opportunity to take them home to read for homework reading. In addition, I will read these books as Interactive Read Alouds, where I read the texts aloud and use the books to teach students how to use reading comprehension strategies to help them better access the text. These strategies are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for sixth grade, such as asking questions, inferring, and drawing conclusions. Further, these books will impart content knowledge to our students, which will give them a basis to understand and a variety of topics in the future.
The few STEM books I have are very popular with students.
Many have already read all of these titles and they are eager to read more. There are children who are fortunate to have vast libraries at home, but the students in our community do not necessarily have those privileges. These books will help give my students access to the content that will positively affect their future. The content in these texts are crucial to ensure they perform better in science, math, and their future careers.
