Full STEAM Ahead: Building a 3D Map of Our Neighborhood
My students need KEVA planks to explore the architecture found in our community.

My Students
My students are fun, compassionate, and curious young children. When they arrive to school in the morning, they race to the schedule, excited to find out what is on the agenda for the day. Every day is fresh, new, and exciting!
My diverse, primarily low-income school is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco.
Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! The community bond shows through as students giggle and play together throughout the day.
My Project
Each year as part of a social studies unit on maps, I take my kindergarteners for a walk through the neighborhood. Students point out their homes, visit the local library, and make observations about the buildings, signs, and modes of transportation they notice. Afterward, we create maps of the neighborhood to share with families and visitors.
I am inspired by a fellow teacher's project to take this unit one step further.
In the project STEAM arcKIDecture: Understanding Art and Architectural Process, this teacher challenged her students to create famous structures out of various building materials. I want my students to replicate the architecture found in our neighborhood using KEVA planks. The planks are all the same shape and size, so they can be used creatively to form almost any shape and design imaginable.
Creating these models will be challenging! I hope to teach my students that by working together and engaging in the engineering design process, they can accomplish even the most challenging of tasks. Upon completion, students will add their creations to a 3D classroom map and share with our school community.
