My Project
The students in my class have severe disabilities, they are lower functioning and most are unable to communicate verbally. An easy way to communicate with them is through food.
To help many students be more willing to complete work or to participate in a lesson, I often use edible incentives.
One skittle or goldfish can go a long way in teaching students how to earn rewards and helps them grow their focusing abilities at school. I will sometimes use little snacks throughout the day as positive reinforcements when my students are on task.
I also implement a snack time toward the end of each school day. During this time, I bring out a special snack and teach the students various signs in sign language. They practice signing the words: more, please, thank you, yes, eat, and want when requesting the snack. It is so important to help them learn the basic life skills of requesting food and drink when they want it.
