This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd graders are a vibrant and active group of curious students. They enjoy learning and are engaged in their lessons. There are 24 students in my class, evenly divided between boys and girls. Over 80% are Hispanic, and all but one will be the first generation in their family to attend college.

Despite numerous challenges they come to school eager to learn and curious about the world.

They all live in East Boston in a heavily Hispanic neighborhood near Logan Airport. East Boston has been home to Boston's newest immigrants for generations and these students are no exceptions. Twenty-one of my 24 students are first generation immigrants to the United States.

My Project

We read many exciting and challenging books in third grade. However, we do not have full class sets of all the books. Instead we have to work from excerpts or photocopies. These photocopies don't have full color or the rich details of the original illustrations. One of the learning goals for 3rd grade is to understand how illustrations relate to the text.

Understanding illustrations is impossible if you can't fully see them; that is why we need a class set of the books in full color.

We will use them during our English Language Arts lessons to learn about illustrations and to read complex rigorous texts. Every student deserves the chance to learn from real books!
