Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are 6th-8th graders in the heart of downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We have a large population of homeless students. One thing our students and parents consistently agree on is that our teachers, administration, and school staff make our school a safe and positive place to learn. Our kids are bright, strong and resilient and together we make up an amazing community.
My Project
Many of the teachers at our Title I school are familiar with this common scene: a student is "acting out", irritable, or unable to concentrate because they're hungry. It's simply impossible to learn if you're not getting the calories and nourishment you need, especially when you're a 6th-8th grader with a growing brain and body.
I am our school counselor, and I try my best to keep the office stocked with snacks and treats to help kids who don't get fed enough at home or who simply need some more calories in the afternoon after running around and having fun at lunch.
As you can imagine, with 500 students this can get pricey and supplies often run low!
If you contribute to this project, you'll make sure that there are simple breakfast and lunch options, healthy snacks, and a treat or two available for kids at our school this year.
