This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Thank you for letting me introduce you to my students! I work at a Title I school in southwestern Virginia. Our school is considered "Title I" due to the extreme poverty. 99%-100% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite their challenges, my students come to school ready to learn.
My classroom is composed of many different backgrounds—my students speak English, Spanish, Somalian, Dari, and a little Haitian Creole.
Unfortunately, we have students in our classroom that experience homelessness, too. I strive to make the classroom the BEST possible environment to make this a "safe" place to learn!
My Project
The research is in and it's everywhere: it's extremely hard for students (or anyone) to learn new information when they are hungry.
Third grade students shouldn't have to be hungry in school.
As their brains and bodies are still rapidly developing, it's a disservice to their education and growth to stay hungry.
I teach at an amazing school with amazing parents and incredible students, but we are also a Title 1 school with 100% free lunches served. Parents don't always have the extra to send their student to school with a snack, much less a "class snack".
By supporting this project, you are putting a daily snack in the hand of an eager learner! We are asking for granola bars, crackers, and fruit snacks for our class to keep our brains engaged and focused!
