My Project
As a first-grade teacher with 19 years of experience, I’ve come to understand that some of the biggest barriers to learning are the ones we don’t always see—like hunger. Many of my students come from low-income households, and while they arrive each day with hopeful hearts and bright smiles, they often carry the weight of food insecurity. It’s difficult to concentrate on a math problem or engage in a small group activity when your stomach is empty. That’s why I’m creating this project: to provide healthy, consistent snacks for my students throughout the school day, especially during our critical math instruction time.
My goal for this project is simple - to fuel my students’ minds and bodies so they can thrive in the classroom.
I want to ensure that no child in my care has to learn while hungry. By offering snacks, I can help each student maintain the energy and focus needed to tackle any subject with confidence and curiosity. Snacks may seem like a small gesture, but in reality, they serve as a bridge between struggle and success. They create an environment where all students can fully engage, participate, and feel ready to meet academic challenges head-on.
What makes my students special is their resilience. Despite the obstacles they face outside of school, they show up each day eager to learn. They are creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and future leaders who just need the right support to shine.
This project will make a real difference in their learning. With proper nourishment, my students will be more alert, more motivated, and more capable of participating fully in math instruction. They’ll be able to stay engaged longer, take on challenging tasks without shutting down, and build the confidence they need to persevere. Most importantly, they’ll feel seen, valued, and supported.
