My Project
My students are resilient, creative, curious, funny, and hard-working 3-5 year-olds who attend Pre-K at a Washington, DC public school. Our full-time classroom is part of an elementary school in a neighborhood where most students are considered to be "at-risk", determined based on socioeconomic needs. My students have been diagnosed with autism or other communication related disabilities. Regardless of these labels, my students consistently prove what is possible with hard work and dedication.
Providing snacks and feeding tools is critical to meeting my students' needs.
Many of my students face food insecurity, and having access to snacks during the school day ensures they can stay focused and energized. A child who isn't worried about their next meal is a child who can concentrate on creative exploration. Additionally, many of my students are still learning skills such as drinking from a cup or using utensils. Having age-appropriate feeding tools, such as non-slip mats, beginner utensils, and cleanup supplies, will teach them independence and foster healthy eating habits. Snack time also provides an opportunity to build social-emotional skills as students practice sharing, patience, and gratitude. During snack time, my students practice critical communication skills by asking for what they want, asking for more, etc. The requested items will do more than satisfy hunger—they will help create a nurturing, inclusive classroom.
