Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are creative, full of energy, and eager to learn—especially when something captures their attention. They come from diverse backgrounds, and many are English learners or have learning differences that can make reading feel challenging. What unites them is their curiosity and desire to see themselves and their interests reflected in what they read. Recently, many of them have been asking, “Why don’t we have graphic novels?” Their excitement and genuine interest sparked this project, and I want to answer their call by filling our library with books that truly speak to them.
Graphic novels that reflect their interests—like Minecraft, DC heroes, friendship, identity, and real-world challenges—will change how my students experience reading.
These stories combine vibrant illustrations with rich, meaningful text, making them accessible and exciting for all readers, including those who sometimes struggle with traditional novels. Graphic novels can teach valuable lessons about empathy, resilience, and teamwork while keeping students engaged through the characters and topics they already love. Whether they are laughing at a superhero’s mishaps, relating to a character's personal journey, or exploring a new fantasy world, these books will open the door to deeper reading and connection.
My goal is to create a classroom library that feels welcoming, relevant, and empowering. I want every student to be able to find a book that excites them and makes them feel seen. With your support, we can bring in a wide range of graphic novels that celebrate diversity, encourage social-emotional growth, and meet students exactly where they are. Together, we can help them build confidence as readers—and inspire a love of reading that lasts far beyond the classroom walls.
