Fuel to Survive Middle School

Help me give my students energy to survive middle school. They are ravenous! This mother lode of snacks will fuel our learning for most of the year.

My Project

I support 6th-8th grade special education students in a public middle school. Every day they embark on the heroic task of surviving an institution that not is designed for them, and every day they survive. Most of the time they thrive! They are hungry from the moment they set foot in my classroom through the end of the day and when I can offer snacks they engage at higher levels and take greater academic risks.

Middle school is hard enough already on the best of days, but it's extra challenging if you're hungry.

My students work their tails off at school coping with learning differences like ADHD and neurodivergence as well as facing social emotional struggles and unmet mental health needs. Many of my students deal with unmet needs outside of school as well. They do not necessarily have a safe space at home or enough food to fuel their growing bodies. I cultivate a space where students feel comfortable enough to explore their authentic identities as they grow towards understanding our world and their place in it. By helping them satisfy basic needs like accessing adequate calories for the day I can confidently challenge them to meet all the obstacles middle school offers, and enable them to access joy and human connection along the way.
