My Students

My students experience singing, listening, moving, reading, and writing music, but they need and want more opportunities to apply this knowledge on instruments. One of the first questions I had from a kindergarten student this year was, "When are we going to get to play instruments?"

At the end of the school year, I want my students to be able to successfully translate the rhythms and melodies they have learned into performances on a variety of instruments.

I would love for my students to participate in a drum circle or percussion ensemble experience in class and know they are competent musicians. The biggest challenge? We currently have four hand drums and some small accessory instruments, but have twenty-three to thirty-three students in most classes. I am so fortunate that I get to work with every student in the school at least once a week. My school is a low income, small neighborhood school and is home to nearly five hundred students from all over the world. Our students include special needs children with orthopedic and vision impairments.

My Project

These Tubano hand drums will be used frequently, beginning with kindergarten students who will explore the sounds of the instruments, as well as work on performing the steady beat. First and second grade students will utilize the drums to read and perform a variety of rhythms and improvise a variety of patterns. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will use the drums to perform a variety of rhythms appropriate to their development, will improvise and work on trading patterns, and ultimately work as an ensemble.

My students will be engaged in the practice of music in a way that they do not often get to experience now.

The musical experience for my students will be transformed and will fulfill their desire to drum or play the instruments!
