My Students

Our ESL program is a new one in our district. We are self-sustaining and independent. There are no textbooks, so I make lots of copies to provide my students with the materials that they need. That creates a need for toner and paper that is endless.

My students are immigrants who have just arrived to the U.S.

They have limited to no English language skills and most have little more than a sixth grade education. Traditionally, these children have been placed in high school where they were expected to meet the same academic standards as their American peers. For many, this was an impossible task and we were setting them up for failure. We have started a new program at our school district's Career Center. Our program's goal is to teach these 16-18 year old children English and provide them with job skills so that they can be successful and independent.

My Project

Without text books, I use a plethora of workbooks, computer generated material and a variety of other sources to produce lessons and materials for the language aspect of the program. We have our own printer/copier, but the need for toner and paper is endless! Students use the copies that I make to create a portfolio to take home to study each night. Lessons include reading, writing, speaking and understanding the English language. Additionally, each student is currently writing an autobiography. These are initially being done in their native language. They have been asked to tell what life was like in their homeland and what caused them to flee to America. They are sharing details of their journey to the boarder and what it was like when they finally crossed into the U.S. Next year, they will be asked to translate these into English. Then, I will have them type both versions, print and bind them to document their stories to share with others for generations to come.

My students, literally, risked life and limb to get to the shores of America in order to be safe.

They left behind everyone and everything they know. Their sacrifices are great and they deserve the chance to pursue their American dreams. Education is the key to success and the items I am asking for, although simple, are essential in our class. So, please, I ask you to find it in your heart to show these children that they are not alone. That together, we are all supporting them and their dreams.
