My Project
In my experience, some of the best moments in the classroom happen when a student's ideas go beyond what I thought was possible. The very best of those moments is when we have the materials, tools and support to bring those ideas into reality. Over the past 3 years, I've worked with my students to develop a maker space corner in my classroom (which is also a hydroponics lab). We are fortunate to have two actively-used 3d printers and a laser cutter, along with some other tools already.
Recently my students have become more interested in building DIY sensors to monitor both the indoor conditions of our hydroponics systems as well as the air and water quality in our local neighborhood, a community where environmental injustices are a major concern.
Some of the materials in this project, like the sensor buildings and arduino kit, will allow us to tackle that specific project, while others, like the laser cutter enclosure, desk organizers, hot glue and laminating sheets, will support the ongoing efforts to make our makerspace the most well-oiled machine possible. In total, this project will enable me to give me students the tools and support they need to do some incredible and impactful projects!
